Ryba Zapiekana w Porach (Baked Fish with Leeks)

Introduction:

Ryba zapiekana w porach is a traditional Polish dish that combines the delicate flavors of white fish with the subtle sweetness of leeks. The fish is baked to perfection, complemented by a creamy leek sauce, making it a flavorful and hearty meal. This dish is perfect for a family dinner or a special occasion, offering a healthy yet indulgent alternative to more common meat-based dishes. The blend of fish and leeks provides both texture and a mild, comforting taste that is sure to satisfy.

Ingredients:

  • 4 pieces of white fish fillets (such as cod, haddock, or pollock)
  • 2 large leeks, cleaned and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter
  • 1 cup of heavy cream or sour cream
  • 1/2 cup of grated cheese (optional, for extra richness)
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup of white wine or vegetable broth (optional for extra depth of flavor)

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Fish: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Season the fish fillets with salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Place them in a greased baking dish.
  2. Prepare the Leeks: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the sliced leeks and sauté until they soften, about 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally to avoid burning. Add salt, pepper, and Dijon mustard. Continue cooking for another 2 minutes.
  3. Make the Creamy Sauce: Lower the heat and pour in the heavy cream (or sour cream). Stir in the white wine or vegetable broth, if using. Let the sauce simmer for 3-5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Pour the leek and cream mixture over the fish fillets in the baking dish. If using, sprinkle grated cheese on top for a rich, golden finish.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Once the fish is ready, remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle fresh parsley over the top and serve hot.
