Śledzie w sosie czosnkowym, or herring in garlic sauce, is a flavorful Polish dish that combines the rich taste of pickled herring with the boldness of garlic and the creaminess of a simple sauce. It’s a popular appetizer or side dish, especially during festive occasions or family gatherings. This dish is known for its balance of flavors, where the tanginess of the herring is perfectly complemented by the aromatic garlic sauce. It’s an easy-to-make yet impressive addition to your recipe repertoire.
Ingredients:
500g of pickled herring fillets
4 cloves of garlic, minced
200g sour cream
2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
1 teaspoon of mustard (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh dill or parsley for garnish
Directions:
Begin by thoroughly rinsing the pickled herring fillets under cold water to remove excess salt. Pat them dry with a paper towel and cut them into bite-sized pieces.
In a small bowl, combine the minced garlic, sour cream, mayonnaise, and lemon juice. Stir well to create a smooth and creamy dressing.
If you want a little extra tang, add the mustard to the mixture and stir until it’s fully incorporated.
Season the sauce with salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.
Gently mix the herring pieces with the garlic sauce, ensuring they’re fully coated.
Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least an hour, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Before serving, garnish with freshly chopped dill or parsley for an extra burst of flavor and color.
