Ingredients
For the herring:
500 g marinated herring fillets (salted or in oil, rinsed and patted dry)
1 large onion, thinly sliced
For the sauce:
1 cup dried prunes, chopped
½ cup raisins
1 tart apple, peeled, cored, and grated
1 cup water
2 tbsp sugar or honey (optional, for added sweetness)
2 tbsp white vinegar
1 tbsp vegetable oil
½ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground cloves
Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
Prepare the herring:
Slice the herring fillets into bite-sized pieces and set them aside.
In a medium bowl, layer the sliced onions and herring alternately, starting and ending with onions.
Make the sauce:
In a saucepan, combine the prunes, raisins, grated apple, water, sugar (or honey), vinegar, oil, cinnamon, and cloves.
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for about 10–15 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper.
